ARTECH 2021 - 10th International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts. 13-15 October 2021- Aveiro, Portugal

Welcome to Aveiro

Aveiro has a long historical and economic background related to salt exploitation. The city had indeed in the production of salt and in the naval commerce its assets from which we still find historical presence in the landscape of neighbourhoods such as the Beira Mar neighbourhood, in its houses and boats, in the ancient marnotos (salt miners) and fisherman, both devoted to S. Gonçalinho and S. Roque.

The oldest known form of the toponym Aveiro appeared around 959, in which Mumadona Dias donates in her will the whole region to the monastery of Guimarães: “Suis terras in Alauario et Salinas”.

The Art Nouveau movement appeared in the XIX century and enriched the city architectural heritage since the beginning of the 20th century. A quite distinctive characteristic of this art movement in Aveiro is the use and production of azulejo tiles with Art Nouveau motifs that decorate the buildings.

The Ria de Aveiro is coastal lagoon connected to the Atlantic Ocean, being located in the central coastal zone of Portugal. The Ria de Aveiro embraces the city´s and regions´ landscape with several channels, branches, islands and mudflats with all the beauty of its diverse fauna and flora. Due to the presence of the lagoon channels coloured by the traditional moliceiro boats, Aveiro is also known as the Portuguese Venice.

The region of Aveiro is facing nowadays an important economic growth. This is the set that walks hand in hand with visions of sustainability, technology and innovation to which the University of Aveiro has been playing a role of utter relevance.

The University of Aveiro was created in 1973 and quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal.
